Module 2: Make Your First TikTok Effect

It's time to start creating effects! Once you've familiarized yourself with the Effect House interface, you can use the different panels and features to construct your effect.

This module demonstrates how to create a simple makeup effect. Although there are many different ways to approach the effect creation process, this walkthrough illustrates the basic workflow of adding objects, fine-tuning properties, and examining results.

Create a Makeup Effect

There are many different types of objects you can add to the Hierarchy panel to achieve different effects. The effect in this demonstration uses Face Effect and Segmentation objects, to create the appearance of makeup and colored hair.

To create an effect from scratch, open Effect House and click Create project on the home screen.

Add Eyeshadow

First add eyeshadow by going to the Hierarchy panel, clicking on the Add button [+], going to Face Effects, and then selecting Eye Effect. This applies premade eyeshadow that you can customize by playing around with the components.

Then go to the Inspector panel to examine the components. Since the Eye Effect object is essentially a 2D face mask that gets applied to the eye region, focus on the properties of the Face Mask component.

  • Face Region: Designates where the mesh will appear on the face - since this Face Mask component belongs to the Eye Effect object, Eyes is selected by default.
  • Which Face: Selects which face the Face Mask object is applied to. Multiple selections are supported. 0 represents the first face that appears in the scene and similarly, 4 represents the fifth face that appears in the scene. All are selected by default.
  • Texture: Chooses a texture from the Assets picker. Since this Face Mask component belongs to the Eye Effect object, a built-in Eye Shadow Texture is selected by default.
  • Opacity: Changes the opacity of the eyeshadow.
  • Blend Mode: Uses different mathematical calculations to determine how to blend color and texture. Each blend mode makes the eyeshadow look a little different, so choose your preferred one.
  • Opacity Enable and Color: Enables you to change the Color of the eyeshadow. Check the Opacity Enable checkbox and then click on the Color field to select your desired color from the color picker.
  • Detect Occlusion: Detects if there is anything blocking the face, so the eyeshadow won't render on top of whatever is blocking the face.

Add Lipstick

Add some lip color by going to the Hierarchy panel, clicking the Add button [+], going to Face Effects, and then selecting Lip Effect. This applies premade lip color that you can customize by playing around with the components.

Notice that this Face Mask component in the Inspector panel looks exactly the same as the Face Mask component for the Eye Effect object, but the Face Region, Texture, and Opacity Texture are set to lips.

This is simply because the Eye Effect object and Lip Effect object work the same way. They are made up of the same components, but just have different face regions and textures assigned.

Add Mascara

Add some mascara by going to the Hierarchy panel, clicking the Add button [+], going to Face Effects, and then selecting Eyelash Effect. This applies premade mascara that you can customize by playing around with the components.

Change Eye Color

You can also change the eye color by going to the Hierarchy panel, clicking the Add button [+], going to Face Effects, and then selecting Eye Color. The Eye Color object is essentially a mask that gets applied specifically to the irises.

To customize the eye color, go to the Inspector panel and adjust the properties. Focus on the properties of the Eye Color component.

Change Hair Color

To change hair color, go to the Hierarchy panel, click the Add button [+], go to Segmentation, and then select Hair Segmentation. This applies color to only the hair region.

You can adjust the Color, Opacity, and Blend Mode properties to your liking.

That's it! You've just created a basic makeup effect.
